Scouting Alumni Newsletter – August 2025

Dear Fellow Scouting Alumni,

The start of August has always prompted me to reflect. When I was younger, the unanswerable question was, “How is Summer Vacation almost over?” With a few more decades of experience, I have refined that question to, “How is summer almost over?” It seems as if it just started, and now it’s drawing to a close.

But, between Memorial Day and Labor Day, summer delivered one great experience after another. Be it summer camp, a Jamboree, a hike in the woods, a sailing trip, an evening at the ballpark, fireworks, a lazy day at home, a road trip to a national park, or countless other experiences, summer made its mark. What a time we had!

Each summer leaves a legacy on our heart and in our spirit. In Scouting, we learn that life’s like that, too.
We each leave a legacy—the only question is what that legacy will be. That might be a heavy question, but Scouting’s enduring values help each of us leave a legacy and give us a common language to use in describing a good life. So the answer could be as simple as treating others with kindness, behaving courteously, being friendly—put simply, living by the Scout Law and Oath.

August is “What Will Your Legacy Be” Month, and I hope you will take some time to reflect on that question. You can be confident, though, that, by living according to Scouting’s values, you’re already on the path to leaving a good one.

And, if you’re concerned about the legacy that the young people in your life might leave, encourage them to give Scouting a try.

Yours in Scouting,

Andrew Miller
