Scouting Alumni Newsletter – May 2026 Dear fellow Scouting Alum, Summer is so close, I can almost taste the Memorial Day barbecue hamburgers! May is a turning point in the Scouting year, when Scouts become more immersed in the “classroom of the outdoors”. And that’s an apt metaphor, because Scouting is, first and foremost, an educational program, albeit an informal one. I like to think of the arrival of summer vacation as a passing of the torch from the formal educators of the schoolroom to the informal educators of the outdoors. In some cases — such as my first Scoutmaster, Mr. Brooks — they are the same. It is no surprise that many teachers find their way to Scouting, and it is also no surprise that many of our alumni become teachers. This May, we are showing our appreciation to teachers for all they do, for the lessons they teach us, the example they set, and the joy they bring. So think of a teacher who changed your life, inside Scouting, outside Scouting, or both, and send some gratitude their way. And, because the world can’t ever have enough gratitude, forward this newsletter to a friend so they can enjoy a trip down memory lane. Yours in Scouting, Andrew Miller |
