Si Brown

Hot Sauce Leader

by Mike Matzinger

Joseph “Si” Brown is a Distinguished Eagle Scout whose impact spans both the culinary world and the Scouting community. After earning his Eagle Scout rank in 1952, Brown continued a lifelong dedication to Scouting, serving the Evangeline Area Council in Louisiana in numerous capacities. He played a pivotal role in the development of Swamp Base, the council’s high-adventure facility—by identifying the site, negotiating a long-term lease, and securing state funding. His unwavering volunteer commitment, combined with his professional achievements, earned him Scouting’s highest honor for adult volunteers—the Silver Buffalo Award—presented in 2015.

In the realm of food manufacturing, Brown has served as President and CEO of Bruce Foods Corporation since 1973. Founded in 1928 in New Iberia, Louisiana, Bruce Foods has become one of America’s largest privately held food manufacturers. It produces a wide range of popular brands—including Cajun Injector, Casa Fiesta, Mexene Chili Products, and Cajun King, in addition to the iconic “Original” Louisiana Hot Sauce.

Brown was instrumental in making Louisiana Hot Sauce a household staple nationwide. In 2015, the company sold the Louisiana Hot Sauce brand, though the company continues producing other beloved lines. Under Brown’s leadership, Bruce Foods not only expanded its product portfolio but also implemented forward-thinking initiatives—such as harnessing renewable energy systems in its facilities—to drive innovation and sustainability.

In recognition of his significant influence in the hot sauce industry, Brown was inducted into the Hot Sauce Hall of Fame in 2018, receiving the classic red jacket and commemorative ring. Describing the honor as “humbling,” Brown reflected on his passion for hot sauce and his contributions to the industry.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Joseph “Si” Brown has exemplified the values of leadership, service, and vision—both through his stewardship of a major food company and his enduring commitment to Scouting. His legacy continues to inspire both young Scouts and food enthusiasts alike.
