Michael Thompson Named 2025 National Alumnus of the Year

Michael Thompson has demonstrated exceptional dedication to Scouting alumni engagement over many years and in numerous leadership roles. He has consistently worked to recognize and reconnect alumni, exemplifying the spirit of “bringing others back to the campfire.”

Among his many contributions, Michael served as the lead volunteer for the inaugural National Gathering of Alumni (NGA) at Philmont in 2022 and is currently preparing for the second NGA, scheduled to take place at the Summit in 2027. He also led the first-ever Alumni Reception held in conjunction with the National Annual Meeting, expanding alumni outreach efforts nationwide.

Michael’s national impact includes long-standing service on several key committees, including the National Membership Standards Committee, the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) Committee, and the National Order of the Arrow Committee, where he served as Vice Chairman for over a decade. He currently serves as NESA Vice President of Membership and leads National Gatherings and Receptions for the Scouting Alumni National Committee.

Additionally, Michael has chaired the Southern Region and Territories NESA Scholarship Selection Committees for over 20 years and the Adams Award Selection Committees for 12 years. His leadership in these roles has significantly shaped recognition programs for outstanding youth and volunteers.

Beyond Scouting, Michael’s career in public service includes roles such as assistant to former South Carolina Governor Carroll A. Campbell Jr., Director of Legislative Affairs for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, and Commissioner/CEO of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind. He currently serves as Director of the Office of Executive Affairs for the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Michael resides in Simpsonville, South Carolina, with his wife Rhonda. Both are active volunteers with the Blue Ridge Council.
