Scout Earns Eagle Rank by Showing Veterans They Are Not Alone

Author: Mike Matzinger

Fourteen-year-old Cameron Berry led nearly 200 participants on a 1.5-mile Be the One Walk in Alexandria, Virginia — a powerful community event focused on veteran suicide prevention.

Under sweltering summer heat, Cameron organized the walk as his Eagle Scout service project, rallying support from Scouts BSA Troop 301, American Legion Post 24, local officials, and veteran service organizations. His leadership brought attention to a critical issue many Americans don’t often see: the mental health struggles facing our veterans.

Cameron’s mission echoed the values of both the Scouts and The American Legion’s Be the One campaign — to ask, to listen, and to act. From coordinating logistics and outreach to leading the walk alongside his Vietnam veteran grandfather, Cameron inspired his community to stand together for a cause that matters deeply.

Congratulations to Cameron and all those who walked beside him. Your leadership shows the power of one person to spark meaningful change.
