During a routine training hike at Caprock Canyon State Park in Texas, Ayden and Mason Macias of Scouts BSA Troop 11 stepped into a life-or-death situation — and saved a pregnant woman and her two toddlers suffering from heat exhaustion in 105°F heat.
With just one water bottle between four people, the family was in serious danger. The brothers, recently trained in wilderness first aid, jumped into action — offering their water, electrolytes, and snacks while applying their emergency response training with calm, competence, and care.
Thanks to their quick thinking and compassion, all members of the family recovered safely. For their courageous actions, Ayden and Mason were awarded the National Certificate of Merit.
Hats off to Scoutmasters B.C. Gilbert and Jennifer Dillard for leading a troop where preparedness meets purpose — and to Ayden and Mason for showing the world what true leadership looks like.
