On June 7, 2025, the pine-covered shores of Lake Murray echoed once again with the voices of Scouts, Scouters, and alumni as nearly 150 current and former staff members gathered at Camp Barstow for a memorable Camp Staff Reunion. The event brought together staff alumni spanning over six decades — from the early years of Camp Barstow and Camp Coker to members of this summer’s staff — all united in their shared love of Scouting and camp staff life.
A highlight of the day was the keynote address by Senator Brad Hutto, a Distinguished Eagle Scout and staff alumnus of both Camp Barstow and Camp Coker. With humor, insight, and heartfelt reflection, Hutto spoke about the enduring impact of Scouting and the unique leadership development that comes from serving on camp staff. His words inspired both alumni and current staff and reminded everyone in attendance of the importance of paying their experience forward.
Guests enjoyed a hearty lunch catered by Shealy’s Barbecue, a beloved local institution known for its classic Southern fare and great hospitality. Inside the Dining Hall, the atmosphere buzzed with conversation as guests explored extensive memorabilia and history displays showcasing Camp Barstow and Camp Coker, as well as honoring the legacy of former Camps Brownlee and Inpaco. Though no staff alumni from those two legacy camps were present — more than five decades after they closed — their influence was still felt through stories, artifacts, and displays that connected past to present.
A special feature of the day was a signature board, placed inside the Dining Hall, where alumni and current staff were invited to add their names. It now stands as a tangible tribute to the generations who have shaped our camps and a lasting symbol of the connections renewed at the reunion.
Looking ahead, organizers announced plans for future alumni gatherings, including milestone events celebrating Camp Coker’s centennial in 2028 and Camp Barstow’s centennial in 2030. These upcoming celebrations will offer more opportunities to honor our shared legacy and look toward the bright future of Scouting in the Palmetto State.
As the event wound down, many lingered in camp, soaking in the spirit of fellowship and tradition. For those who have ever served on camp staff, this reunion was more than a gathering — it was a homecoming. And it reaffirmed what we’ve always known: once you serve on camp staff, you’re part of something that lasts a lifetime.
