Nicholls State University’s Police Chief, Alexander Barnes, wears many hats — law enforcement leader, Eagle Scout, mentor, and community advocate. His dedication to serving others extends far beyond campus life.
Each summer, Barnes helps lead the Scouting America Southeastern Louisiana Council’s annual camp in Perkinston, Mississippi, where nearly 400 Scouts spend weeks hiking, swimming, canoeing, and learning lifelong skills. As an executive board member overseeing camping and outdoor programs, he ensures youth have the opportunity to explore, grow, and thrive.
“I volunteer a lot with Scouting because I’m an Eagle Scout,” Barnes said. “So, I give back to the program that has done so much for me.”
In addition to Scouting, Barnes serves on the board of Hi-5, an afterschool program in Thibodaux that supports local children with homework, teaches etiquette, and provides enriching experiences — from sports games to summer camps and Christmas gifts.
Known affectionately as “Uncle Alex” around Nicholls, Barnes’ compassion and leadership have made him a role model to students, colleagues, and families across the bayou region.
“I like working with kids all the way around. I like serving my community and giving back,” he said. “We have to create environments where we know our children are safe and can succeed.”
A true example of service, leadership, and heart — thank you, Chief Barnes, for inspiring the next generation of leaders through Scouting and beyond.
