Cub Scout Awarded One of Scouting America’s Highest Honors

by Mike Matzinger

Eight year old Jasper Lochotzki of Port Clinton, Ohio was recently recognized with the National Certificate of Merit from Scouting America after an act of courage that saved his little sister’s life.

Just before his seventh birthday, Jasper noticed two year old Joey slip into the deep end of a hotel pool while the family was celebrating. He immediately pulled her to safety, called for help, and stayed with her until their mom reached them.

Cub Scout Pack 361 honored Jasper at its November meeting, noting that his calm decisions and quick action reflected the best qualities of Scouting. Leaders say it is the first award of its kind presented in the community.

Jasper remains modest about the attention, but his family and the local Scout community view his actions as a powerful example of preparedness and character.
