Alum Addison Jones Honors Pelican Girls

by Mike Matzinger

A new historic marker was unveiled at the History Museum of Mobile to honor the Pelican Girls, the French women who arrived in 1704 to help establish the early colony by building families with local settlers. Descendants joined the ceremony, including alum Addison Jones, whose Eagle Scout service project led to the marker’s creation. Jones is also developing a children’s book to share the story with young readers. The marker now stands near Fort Condé, Louisiana, offering a lasting reminder of the women who shaped Mobile’s earliest days.
