Eagle Scout Foils Car Jacking

by Mike Matzinger

A 17-year-old Eagle Scout in Matthews, North Carolina, safely escaped a kidnapping attempt after a man allegedly jumped into his car and pretended to be a police officer.

The suspect, later identified as 40-year-old John McGough, reportedly told the teen he was involved in a police investigation and needed a ride. While driving, the teen noticed the man acting strangely, giving directions that did not make sense, and repeatedly touching his jacket in a way that made him fear he might be armed.

Staying calm, the teen avoided escalating the situation and spoke in a friendly, non-confrontational way. He cleverly steered the drive toward the Matthews Police Department, then convinced the man to let him out by saying he needed to use the restroom. Once at a safe distance, he ran to the station for help.

Police quickly arrested McGough nearby. He now faces charges including kidnapping and impersonating a law enforcement officer and is being held on bond.
