Teen Trades Video Games for World War II Living History

by Mike Matzinger

A unique hobby is turning into a hands-on history lesson for one Ohio freshman.

Ben Beers, a 14-year-old freshman at Canfield High School, recently joined Venturing Crew 1944, a Scouting America program focused on World War II history. The group meets monthly at the MAPS Air Museum at the Akron-Canton Airport, immersing members in authentic living history.

As a new probationary member, Ben is learning how soldiers lived and served during World War II. Members assemble period-correct uniforms and equipment, participate in parades and memorial events, visit historic military sites, and take part in reenactments such as the D-Day Ohio event in Conneaut.

Adviser Jim Cassler says the program helps young people develop leadership while honoring the sacrifices of those who served. For Ben, the experience is also a chance to connect with other teens who share a passion for history and preserving the legacy of World War II.
