High School Student Uses Scouting Preparation to Respond to a Fire

by Mike Matzinger

A Mashpee, Massachusetts Scout is being recognized for quick thinking and calm leadership during a potentially dangerous situation on a recent school field trip.

While attending a volunteer appreciation event at the Mashpee Senior Center, Jack Borowski responded immediately after a lightbulb exploded and ignited a fire. Without hesitation, he located a fire extinguisher and successfully put out the flames before they could spread. Thanks to his fast action, no one was injured and the situation was quickly contained.

If Jack’s name sounds familiar, we previously reported on him last fall. Alongside fellow Scouts BSA Troop 36 member Brodie Perry, he stepped up during a hike on New Hampshire’s Mount Lafayette. They encountered a young woman who could no longer make it down the mountain, assessed her condition using their first aid training, and ultimately helped carry her nearly two miles to safety with support from their troop.

Behind these moments are hundreds of unnamed volunteers who make this kind of readiness possible every day. The First Aid Merit Badge counselor who taught the fundamentals. The Scoutmaster who reinforced leadership and decision-making. The Commissioner who supported the unit’s development. The troop committee members who quietly ensure programs run smoothly. And the many mentors, parents, and community volunteers who give their time without recognition.
