Congratulations to Sawyer Nelsen of Troop 12 for leading a major conservation project on Ramstein Air Base in Germany!
Sawyer organized and directed a team of Scouts, family members, and adult volunteers to remove approximately 2 dozen Japanese knotweed plants, an invasive species that threatens native ecosystems through its aggressive underground growth. The project supported the 86th Civil Engineer Squadron Natural Resources Program and required careful planning, coordination, and leadership as volunteers worked across multiple locations on the installation.
Beyond removing the invasive plants, the team also helped prepare the sites for native grass regrowth, supporting the long-term health of the environment and reducing the risk of future reinfestation.
“This project gave me the opportunity to lead a team while making a real impact on the environment here at Ramstein,” said Nelsen. “Because knotweed spreads underground, it takes time and teamwork to remove it correctly.”
Sawyer’s efforts will have a lasting impact on the natural resources at Ramstein Air Base while serving as an important step in his journey toward earning the rank of Eagle Scout.
Well done, Sawyer, and thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to make this project a success!
