Scout Saves Mother With Heimlich Maneuver

Author: Mike Matzinger

Benjamin Hallquist, a Life Scout from Fallon, Nevada Troop 1776, is a hero.

At a volunteer appreciation barbecue at Logos Christian Academy, his mother, Jessica Hallquist, began choking on a piece of steak. Despite trying to dislodge the food herself, she was unable to breathe, and her mother, Valerie Williams, rushed to Benjamin’s table for help.

Benjamin immediately sprang into action, pulling his mother to her feet and performing the Heimlich maneuver. After an initial misplacement of his hands, he adjusted, and on the second attempt, the obstruction was cleared, allowing Jessica to breathe again.

Benjamin, who has been with the Scouts for three years and is currently working toward his Eagle Scout rank, credited his calmness to his training, which included the First Aid merit badge. He also serves as a Troop Guide, helping younger scouts.

His grandmother, Valerie, praised his bravery, and Benjamin has been nominated for a Lifesaving and Meritorious Action Award.

A true example of Scout training in action!
