Making Camps Safe, Fun, and Accessible

Author: Mike Matzinger

July is Making a Difference to Children Month. At Scouting America, making a difference means making sure every child can experience the adventure of camp — no matter their abilities.

This summer, camps across the country are embracing the Special Needs Prepared Camp program. This initiative is all about creating inclusive, supportive environments where every Scout feels welcome and empowered.

From physical accessibility — like wheelchair-friendly trails and showers — to sensory-sensitive program options and specially trained staff, camps are evolving to meet the diverse needs of all Scouts.

Whether a Scout has visible or invisible disabilities, such as autism, ADHD, or mobility challenges, the message is clear: there’s a place for them in the great outdoors.

Because every Scout deserves a summer of belonging, growth, and unforgettable adventure.
