Building the Future, One Skill at a Time

Author: Mike Matzinger

Across the country, communities are facing a growing shortage of skilled trade workers — from electricians and carpenters to plumbers and auto mechanics. These essential professions form the backbone of our daily lives, and the need for new talent in these fields has never been greater. Recognizing this challenge, Scouting America, through the Dan Beard Council, has launched an exciting new initiative to help prepare the next generation of skilled professionals.

Construction is now underway on a new education center in Miami Township. This facility will provide students in grades 5 through 10 with hands-on learning experiences across a wide range of skilled trades. The goal is to spark curiosity, build confidence, and introduce young people to meaningful, purpose-driven career paths. More than just a building, the center will serve as a hub where youth can explore trades, gain real-world experience, and connect their interests with future opportunities.

This project is a powerful extension of Scouting’s mission to prepare young people for life and work in today’s world. For alumni and supporters of Scouting, this is a moment to celebrate. Your continued involvement and belief in the values of Scouting make initiatives like this possible. If you work in the skilled trades or know someone who does, we welcome your support — whether through mentorship, programming, or community partnerships.
