Camp Tahquitz Celebrates 100 Years of Scouting

Author: Mike Matzinger

Camp Tahquitz, the Long Beach Area Council’s beloved mountain camp, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this summer—joining a select group of century-old Scout camps in the country.

To mark the milestone, the council is hosting a public celebration on June 28, featuring a barbecue dinner, campfire program, and open access to program areas like equestrian trail rides, shooting sports, and Scoutcraft.

Founded in 1925 in Idyllwild, Calif., the camp moved in the late 1950s to its current 640-acre site in the San Bernardino Mountains. It quickly became a top destination for Scouts, known for pioneering programs like its climbing tower (added in 1972) and wrangler program (1992).

Historic cabins from the 1880s, still in use today, connect generations of Scouts. Most summer campers now come from out-of-council units across California, Nevada, and Arizona.

The celebration also honors the Tahquitz Community, the all-volunteer staff who have kept the camp’s spirit thriving for a century.
