Eagle Scout Rock Star Turns Childhood Scout Camp Game Into New Video Game

Before they were building a Grammy-winning music career with Imagine Dragons, brothers Dan and Mac Reynolds were just Scouts spending their summers in the woods playing capture the flag.

Now, they’re turning that iconic Scouting experience into a video game.

The Reynolds brothers, both Eagle Scouts from the Las Vegas Area Council, have announced their upcoming video game Last Flag, inspired by the outdoor nighttime capture-the-flag games they played at Scout camp as kids. The game is currently in alpha testing and is expected to launch in 2026 on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, with a console version also in development.

“Dan and I grew up in Scouts, and we’ve got a bunch of brothers, and we used to play capture the flag in the woods at night,” said Mac Reynolds, CEO and co-founder of Night Street Games, in an interview with Variety. “It’s kind of a quintessential childhood experience.”

Dan Reynolds, lead singer of Imagine Dragons, echoed that sentiment in an interview with WBUR-FM in Boston: “Last Flag is essentially hide-and-seek with a flag. So Mac and I both grew up in Scouting, and we would go to Scout camp every summer for a couple of weeks. My favorite part about Scout camp was we would play capture the flag in the woods.”

The game is a competitive 5-vs-5 multiplayer experience where each match lasts 20 minutes or less. Players can choose from 10 different characters — including one named “Scout.” The game aims to channel the spirit of classic capture the flag through teamwork, strategy, and stealth.

Mac Reynolds described the design philosophy behind the game as grounded in authentic childhood memories. “Real hiding, real finding, the thrill of nature, being a hero, sneaking around,” he said. “We started from that core place of ‘What does a pure capture-the-flag game really feel like?’”

Capture the flag has long been a staple at Scout camps, where its roots in real battlefield tactics — including the importance of a color bearer in Civil War-era battles — lend the game both historical weight and enduring appeal.

Dan’s journey began long before the spotlight. He started writing songs as a 14-year-old Scout while learning piano, drums, and saxophone. He earned his Eagle Scout rank at 17, served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 19, got married at 23, became a father at 25, and helped launch a cancer-fighting charity by 26.

Though music made him a global name, his connection to Scouting — and the experiences that shaped him — continues to influence his creative work.

With Last Flag, Dan and Mac Reynolds are proving that childhood moments spent outdoors in Scouting can leave a lasting mark — even in digital worlds.
