Alum Edward Holland Honored for Heroic Rescue Attempt

Edward Holland, a paramedic from Fall River, Massachusetts, is receiving recognition after attempting to rescue a person from the Taunton River.

Fall River Emergency Medical Services Chief Bethann Faunce reported that first responders were called to Charles Street after concerns arose that someone might need medical attention. Holland and his colleagues immediately began searching for the individual. National Grid employees nearby told them the person appeared unsteady and was last seen walking near the end of Birch Street. According to Chief Faunce, Holland eventually spotted the individual face down in the river. Without hesitation, he removed his radio, entered the water, and swam toward the unresponsive person. Holland performed a quick assessment, turned the individual face-up, and swam them back to shore. His swift and courageous actions reflect the dedication and bravery expected of emergency responders.

“Despite the tragic result of this event … I wish to acknowledge the heroism and bravery demonstrated by paramedic Holland,” Faunce said.

“Relying on his experience as a swimmer, and an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America, paramedic Holland placed the value of preserving life safety above his own safety and acted with courage.”
