Montana Scout Saves Younger Brother From Drowning, Receives Honor Medal

By: Mike Matzinger

In July, 14-year-old Scout William Hanson of Belgrade, Montana, demonstrated extraordinary heroism by saving his younger brother Ethan from drowning at Canyon Ferry Lake.

While playing in the water, Ethan was swept away by inflatables without a life preserver, and William bravely secured himself to a paddleboard, reached his brother, and guided him safely back to shore, assisted by their father. William’s Scout training, particularly in first aid and lifesaving skills, proved critical in the rescue. His actions were deemed exceptional enough for the national organization to award him the Honor Medal, given for unusual heroism and skill at considerable personal risk.

Presented during the Mountain Valley District Fall Camporee, the award highlighted the values and training Scouting instills, with William’s younger brother Ethan personally pinning the medal on him.
