Young Alum Receives Medal of Merit

by Mike Matzinger

A young Scout in Las Vegas is being honored with the Scouting Medal of Merit after his quick thinking helped save his father during a medical emergency.

Just over a year ago, nine-year-old Greyson and his younger brother were waiting for their father, Jared, to take them to school when Jared suddenly suffered an epileptic seizure. The boys had never witnessed a seizure before.

Greyson said he was scared but knew he had to act quickly. He took his younger brother with him, ran to a neighbor’s house, and asked them to call 911. His actions helped ensure his father received immediate medical care.

Greyson’s parents say they were incredibly proud when they learned everything he had done. In addition to getting help, Greyson kept his younger brother calm and stayed focused during the emergency.

The Las Vegas Area Council later recognized Greyson’s bravery and presence of mind by awarding him the Scouting Medal of Merit. His parents say the life and emergency skills he learned through Scouting and school helped him respond when it mattered most.
