Last year, I asked my friend Stephen Deatherage to launch a series called “The Merit Badge That Changed My Life.”
Stephen is an exceptional storyteller, and the response to his first four pieces has been incredible. It’s a powerful reminder of how lasting the impact of a single merit badge experience can be, and there’s more great content on the way.
Serving as a Merit Badge Counselor is one of the most meaningful ways for Scouting alums to give back. When you share something you genuinely enjoy, whether it’s a hobby, a skill, or your profession, you create an experience that stays with a young person long after the badge is earned.
As Arden Dougan of the Scouting America Merit Badge Committee notes, Scouts often discover new interests and even future career paths through merit badges. That kind of influence starts with someone willing to share what they love.
Stephen’s series reinforces what many of us already know. The moments Scouts remember most are the ones that bring learning to life. Hands-on experiences. Real-world insight. Mentors who make it all click.
If you’ve been thinking about reconnecting with Scouting, this is a great place to start.
Check out Aaron on Scouting’s article using the link below to learn more about the merit badge counselor opportunity, then reach out to your local council or a unit leader and take that first step. Your time and experience can shape a story someone else will tell for years to come.
I currently serve as a counselor for American Business, Camping, Chemistry, Cooking, Entrepreneurship, Hiking, Inventing, Radio, and Salesmanship. With more than 140 merit badges available and more in development, there’s something for everyone.
Which one will you choose?
