Scout Honors Beloved School Dog

by Mike Matzinger

Earning the rank of Eagle Scout requires leading a service project. Often, the project the Scout selects comes from a deeply personal place and reflects what matters most to them.

For Logan Luparell, that inspiration came from a dog named Butch.

Butch, a beloved service dog at Illinois Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley Elementary, spent years providing comfort, calm, and connection to students. His presence made a lasting impact on so many young lives.

After Butch’s passing earlier this year, Logan decided to honor that impact in a powerful way. For his service project, he is creating a memorial garden and Labrador statue near the elementary school’s new playground, a space that will reflect the joy and comfort Butch brought to the school community.

As Superintendent Jeremy Darnell shared, “That dog meant a lot to a lot of kids.” And now, that legacy will continue for years to come.

Great job, Logan, on selecting a project that uplifts an entire community. We look forward to sharing photos of your completed project.
