Scout’s Eagle Scout Service Project Promotes Remembrance and Healing

by Mike Matzinger

This is one of those Eagle Scout service projects that stops you for a moment.

In Endicott, New York, Life Scout Schuyler Savage recently dedicated the Broome County Crime Victims Memorial, a project shaped by personal loss and built to serve his community.

After losing his mother, Tess Savage, to domestic violence, Schuyler began working on something that would carry meaning far beyond himself. He envisioned a place where families could remember loved ones, reflect on their lives, and find comfort in shared memories. Over several years, he raised funds, organized volunteers, and worked with community partners to bring that vision to life.

For Schuyler, the project carried a deeper purpose from the start.

“This project has never just been about getting Eagle. It’s been about honoring the lives of everyone who has lost their lives, preserving their memories, and creating a place where we can come back and relive some of those happy moments with them.”

That kind of purpose is what Scouting is meant to nurture. Not just leadership in name, but leadership that shows up when it matters most.

Today, the memorial stands as a permanent place for remembrance and healing in Broome County. It also stands as a reminder of what can happen when someone takes personal grief and turns it into service for others.

Congratulations to Schuyler on a powerful and lasting contribution to his community.

Who can you invite today to become a Scout? Someone invited Schuyler and changed his life and Broome County through him.
