NFL’s David Montgomery Honored with Scouting’s North Star Award for Leadership

By: Mike Matzinger

Detroit Lions Running Back and Eagle Scout David Montgomery was honored on October 7 with one of Scouting’s highest accolades. Lions owner Sheila Ford Hamp presented Montgomery with the North Star Award. The award recognizes individuals who have made a “significant and lasting impact” on Scouting.

Montgomery started his Scouting journey as a Cub Scout and eventually earned the rank of Eagle Scout at age 17. He led donation drives at his high school football games to collect toiletries for the unhoused community.

Last year, Montgomery became Scouting America’s first recruitment ambassador, a role he continues to serve in today. See how he credits his time in Scouting with developing him into the person, player, teammate, and leader he is today.
