by Mike Matzinger

Congratulations to Paul W. Kaufman on his appointment as First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware.

With nearly two decades of service as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Paul has built an exceptional career in civil fraud enforcement, recovering hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars, advancing innovative litigation practices, and mentoring the next generation of federal prosecutors. His work as a respected educator, scholar, and trial advocacy instructor has influenced countless attorneys across the country.

Equally impressive is Paul’s longstanding commitment to developing future leaders. An Eagle Scout, he has remained deeply involved in Scouting America as a leader and merit badge counselor, dedicating his time to mentoring young people and helping them build the values of integrity, service, and citizenship. He is also helping to develop Scouting America’s Public Service Academy program, creating opportunities for youth to explore careers dedicated to serving their communities and country.

Paul’s passion for mentorship extends beyond Scouting. A lifelong supporter of mock trial education, he has served on the Board of Directors of the National High School Mock Trial Championship since 2011 and led the organization as Chair from 2020 to 2025. His dedication to preparing and inspiring the next generation of leaders reflects a career defined not only by professional excellence, but also by service to others.

As First Assistant U.S. Attorney, Paul will help lead the Office’s mission across the District of Delaware, bringing the same integrity, expertise, and commitment to public service that have distinguished every chapter of his career.

Congratulations, Paul, on this well-deserved appointment.
