Seventeen-year-old Sam VanNorman, a Pennsylvania high school senior, Eagle Scout candidate, and community volunteer, is being recognized for his heroic actions this summer at the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, NM.
When Sam heard someone call for an AED, he rushed to the scene where a man had collapsed and was unresponsive. Drawing on his training, Sam immediately began CPR and coordinated others to assist. After five rounds of compressions and use of the AED, the man regained a pulse and began breathing again—thanks to Sam’s quick thinking and persistence.
Sam has since been honored locally with a resolution praising his courage, leadership, and dedication to serving others.
In his own words: “It’s an opportunity you never want to have, but I’m glad I had the training.”
In addition to school, Scouting, and his participation in local government, Sam also volunteers with Lower Saucon Fire Rescue. He began his Scouting journey with Cub Scout Pack 349 and is now a member of Scouts BSA Troop 311 and Venturing Crew 311.
